When it comes to adhesive vinyl, the project possibilities are truly endless – there is just so much you can do with it. But today, I’m going to show you one of my favorites!
Pour yourself a cup of coffee and join me as I walk you through how to create a cozy, customized coffee mug using adhesive vinyl.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Step 1: Design
Start by upload your design to Cricut DesignSpace. Toady I’m using this sweet floral pumpkin design from Etsy.
Adjust the size of your design to fit your project surface, then press the “Make It” button.
Step 2: Cutting
Now it’s time to load the vinyl onto your mat. When you’re working with adhesive vinyl, you always want to have the color side of the vinyl facing up, and the backing side facing toward your mat.
Next load your mat onto your machine and let it get to work!
Step 3: Weeding
Once your machine has finished cutting the design remove it from the mat and trim away the
section of vinyl with your design on so that you can the rest for another project.
Start at one corner and gently remove the excess vinyl from the outside of the design, using
your weeding tools to remove any of the remaining inside pieces as necessary.
Step 4: Transfer
Once you’ve finished, you’re ready to transfer your weeded design onto your project surface.
Remove the transfer tape from its backing and place it over your design. Burnish with a
squeegee, or even a credit card, to release the vinyl from its backing and move it onto the
transfer tape.
Now you’re ready to apply! Simply peel the transfer tape from the backing and apply it to a
clean surface.
PRO TIP: When transferring a design to rounded surface like a coffee mug, start in the middle
and work outwards, alternating from side to side until your design lays flat. This method helps
to prevent any creases or bubbles in your vinyl.
Step 5: Peel and Enjoy!
Now for the fun part!
Rub over your design once more to make sure it has fully adhered to your project surface and
then carefully peel away your transfer tape revealing your finished project.
The best part? You can complete this project from start to finish in less time than it takes to
make a fresh pot of coffee! And your project is ready to use. No need to seal!
